Savings for children: Give them a nice surprise

If you're one of the many people who sometimes finds it hard to make ends meet, you may have explored the option of a savings account. If you have opened a savings deal and found it to be beneficial and you are also a parent, you may want to also consider savings for children.

It may not seem like a necessary thing to do - after all, why would children need savings when parents seem to be their personal bank account? In actuality the savings would not be for their benefit now while they are still young, but to help them when they are older. By having a high-interest savings scheme, or a fixed rate isa, that you put relatively small amounts of money into on a regular basis, they could have a nice sum of money when they turn 18 or 21, and they can put it towards their own car or flat, or perhaps furnishing their first home.

There are a number of ways the money could come in useful, and most certainly a lot of adults can agree that their lives would have been that much easier had their parents started a savings scheme for them in their youth.

Savings accounts are not all equal, and the savings rates vary from account to account. You will need to look around for the best one and you may think that savings bonds are the best option, as they provide high interest rates over a set period of time, say 10 years, during which time you can only make a limited number of withdrawals. This could be the best option as it gives the account time to flourish - which is what you will want if you do not plan on giving the children access to it until a later date.

Savings deals for children may be of a real benefit to them when they reach an age where they are going to venture off on their own. Better still, it could help your own bank balance as they will have their own funds rather than dipping into yours constantly. So give your kids a treat: start their very own savings account.
